Průhonický park

Jazyková hlídka SlovaDne navštívila Průhonický park a svedla souboj s parkovacím automatem. Suďte sami:

Check Prime Minister

A posílám jeden obrázek. Není o češtině ani z Česka, ale snad pobaví.

(Foceno v Indii, v Bombaji.

Pivo Take Away

Canoe

Christopher Columbus, the much maligned explorer, broght the word canoe to the Europeans, stealing it from the Haitians. Later, the Europeans stole what little the Haitians had left, (but that’s for another eblog). Czechs immediately began using the term, and vigorously exploiting the recreational activities available on the many rivers and streams in the lovely bohemian basin. After a few unfortunate mishaps on the waters, they discovered that it is necessary to speak to other kanoisti. As a result, the Czechs invented the useful phrase „ahoj“. As is natural, enough Czechs later turned to piracy on the high seas that the entire maritime world took up this way of greeting each other. Though we spelled it „ahoy“, even on a nuclear aircraft carrier we’d all say „ahoy“.

I said „ahoj“ to the photographer just before he snapped this picture. Yes, that’s brave, intrepid, fearless Fred dauntlessly taking on the terrifying rapids of the wild Sazava River. Note the determination. Note the firm grip on the paddle. Moments later I tipped over, spilling into the rushing water. Surprisingly, the rocks under the fast moving water are quite hard and sharp. And there is no sunglasses retrieval service…

Soup with sea force

The Cafe Louvre in the center is a fabulous restaurant. In fact it was in this illustrious place that Fred Williams and Jiri Pallas first met back in 1999, introduced by the ever lovely and talented Lotta Fjelkegard. But their menu has a few mistakes. The best of these is the parenthetical explanation that Boullabaise is Soup with sea force. Imagine if such things were really true — you innocently order what you think is a normal soup when suddenly you are bombarded from offshore by a heavy frigate while marines make an amphibious landing on your table.

Dogs on a leach

Even the simplest of spelling errors can cause us all to scoff. Clearly the translator meant to write „leash“, a rope that goes around your dog’s neck. Unfortunately, we have the word leach which is the process of removing excess salts and minerals from the soil by a series of repeated flushings with water. Considering the way dogs seem free to poop where they will in this city, it may not be a bad idea to remove their excess salts and minerals by flushing them with water — it seems more sanitary. At least the translation didn’t turn out „leech“, which would be a funny sight. Imagine every dog being required to ride around on top of bloodsucking parasites — or is that the job of governments?
