Blábol

Special thanks (and apologies) to guest professor Vladimir Sklenar…

Blah is an honorable and ancient word dating back a hundred years, when it
was first uttered by former President Grover Cleveland on this day in 1906. Asked what he would say that early spring evening at a formal banquet in honor of the reknown flautist Dame Edna Thistlebottom, Grover replied, blah, blah, blah. This wonderfully useful and expressive term has been Czechified into the melifluous blabol, which is furthermore transformed into a verb. So today, in honor of the dearly missed President Cleveland, I have again blabolil for slovodne. I like to blabolit, and you may all be assured of my continued blaboly in the future.

  1. Is it true or is it just another of your BLABOLs (prates) Fred ? I haven’t decided what to do about your ZVAST (bosh) ? Shall I believe such unlikely KRAVINA (rubbish) or consider it worthless VÝMYSL (fictious idea) ? How could it be possible that this ordinary Czech KEC (baloney) comes from an english PLKANI (blethering) of former President of US? I believe this little TLACH (tittle- tattle) – bla,bla,bla…..(blah,blah,blah….) was invented in Czech lands!

    P.S. It’s also nice tongue-twister „little tittle tattle“.

  3. Jamie, you should rest assured that all of the entries for slovodne are rigorously researched, cross-referenced, and indexed by my estemed colleagues and fellow researchers, the well-known, respected, and even revered Honza and Standa. They achieved their linguistic credentials by the indisputable and long-standing academic process of buying Fred a beer.

BTW: If there are any relatives of the former president Cleveland reading this, please, please, please don’t sue us.
