It’s always a problem in English distinguishing between „girlfriend“ and „friend who is a girl“. My girlfriend just arrived from Brasil. She is a „Přítelkyně“ and I am her „přítel“. If she were just a friend who happened to be female, then she would be a „kamarádka“ and I would be her „kamarád“. Or „Ka-má-rád“?

It is much easier in Portuguese: „namorada“ or „namorado“, instead of „amiga“ or „amigo“. I have always had the same problem in using these English words… at least no misunderstandings with you, Fred! ;o)
That is so true. There are never any misunderstandings when I speak Czech. This is why I’ve been invited to write for slovodne…because of my outstanding research skills. In fact, tonight I’m going to be researching…at the hospoda!
