Moucha v mouce

Yesterday, I wanted to fry some fish. To do this properly, I needed flour. So I went to my friend downstairs and asked, „můžu pučit moucha?“ She laughed. „Máš pavouka?“ Why would she ask me if I had a spider. I tried again, and she laughed again. Then she explained to me that I was asking for a bug. To my ears there is very little difference between the „ch“ and „k“ sounds of Czech. But when I try to borrow flour again, I’ll be sure to ask for „mouka“.

  1. So you may have the same problem with „jdu“ a „jedu“ which is „I go“ in English in both cases …

  2. Oh Vlada, you don’t know the half of it! I have problems with almost everything in Czech. This is why I conduct such extensive professional scientific research on the language.

Just the other night I was conducting this vital work in my usual manner when I asked one of my research assistants about my progress. First I had to wake him up, since he was face down on the table soaking in spilled beer.

„Hele, ty vole, jak mluvim cestina?“

„Co ze? Ty vole, jsem opili.“

„Ano, vole. Ty jsi opice. Rozumim. Ale jak mluvim cestina, co?“

    „Dejme jeste panaku!“

„Jo, jo. Budu. Ale, jak mluvim cestina?“

    „Kupujes panak?“

    „Ano.“

    „Mluvis vyborne.“

  6. Problems with Czech pronunciation? Have you ever tried to say 333 in Czech? -Třistatřicettři. There is also a stupid rhyme for people who can’t say „ř“ – 333 silver fire engines -in Czech it is:Třistatřicettři stříbrných stříkaček!

  7. The glorious three hundred thirty three thing…oh yes. This is the typical Czech reply whenever I mispronounce ř. Czechs take a great deal of pride in the difficulty of their language. Us stupid foreigners can only sit back and watch in amazement as you make these crazy sounds.

My reaction is simple. I just ask if they can say the same thing in English…three hundred thirty three. Hah! That’s right, it’s not so easy to make that „th“ sound either, huh? Yep. Czech is difficult, but English can be fun too.
