The Englishman Charles Churchill once wrote, With various readings stored his empty skull, / Learn’d without sense, and venerably dull. This admirably demonstrates the difference between being intelligent and merely well-read. The Czech word for well-read is „sečtělý“. When you say this word it can end up sounding (for non czech) very similar to „sešlý“, which means decrepit. Apparently there is little difference between those who are well-read and those who are going into their dotage. Czechs know this, and so did Churchill.
